Every second Saturday of the month, we work at some point on the Cami\u0301 d’Andorra<\/font><\/strong> <\/p>\n

On Saturday, June 12, 5 volunteers went to put up some signs in the Civi\u0301s river area. The volunteers were: Paco Penella and Josep Maria Vila, from Lleida; Ramon Bosch and Eusebio Garcia, from Girona, and Jordi Piferrer, from Barcelona.<\/font><\/strong><\/p>\n

A few months ago, Joan de Cal Ferrer, from Sant Joan Fumat, cleaned part of the old road that goes from Sant Joan Fumat to La Farga de Moles. He stopped his work when he reached the point where the old road joins with the one that goes up to La Cabra Morta i Argolell, which is also the point where the old road coincides with the current paved road. There is currently a concrete bridge at this point to cross the Civi\u0301s River, but in 1937 this bridge was not there.<\/font><\/strong><\/p>\n

Precisely where the old road coincides with the current road is where the 1937 expedition crossed the Sant Joan Fumat road and went straight up to the Barranc de la Cabra Morta. This can be deduced from the documents of the 1937 expedition and the conversations held with the guide Josep Cirera and other people from Argolell. This crossing point between the old road of Sant Joan Fumat (which was the one guarded by the border militiamen) and the way down from the Collada de la Torre (which is the one followed by the expeditionaries of 1937) is at the height of the current bridge that crosses the river Civi\u0301s.<\/font><\/strong><\/p>\n

In short we can say that we have well laid out the old path that goes from Sant Joan Fumat to the Farga de Moles, which was the path followed by the border carabinieri, and on the other hand we have the path down from the Collada de the Tower, which was what the fugitives followed.<\/font><\/strong><\/p>\n

This weekend we have dedicated ourselves to putting vertical signposts at different points to highlight these two itineraries: the old path of Sant Joan Fumat, followed by the border carabinieri, and the path of the fugitives who crossed the river Civi\u0301s to climb the Dead Goat, on the way to Andorra.<\/font><\/strong><\/p>\n

This point was very dangerous as it crossed the two routes: that of the carabinieri and that of the fugitives.<\/font><\/strong><\/p>\n

We can read what Juan Jime\u0301nez Vargas wrote in 1980 on this point:<\/font><\/strong><\/p>\n

Despue\u0301s, dejando a la izquierda la collada de la Torre y el cerrojada el Tosal, se inicia la bajada, y ya todo era descenso hacia el camino de Sant Joan a la Farga de Moles, junto al barranco de Civi\u0301s. La bajada era muy mala, con muchas piedras. A medida que baja\u0301bamos era ma\u0301s importante el silencio, pero las piedras que rodaban se podi\u0301an oi\u0301r desde abajo. Nos acerca\u0301bamos al punto negro. Llegamos al ri\u0301o \u2014el barranco de Civi\u0301s\u2014, entre el segundo y el tercer puente. Paramos muy cerca del ri\u0301o, entre los a\u0301rboles, sin hacer ruido ninguno, esperando el momento oportuno para cruzar aquel paso verdaderamente peligroso y empezar otra subida. <\/font><\/p>\n

Cuando paramos junto al barranco de Civi\u0301s, el jefe dijo que una patrulla andaba rondando por el camino que teni\u0301amos que cruzar, y que e\u0301l habi\u0301a oi\u0301do claramente los pasos. Hizo correr la voz: <\/font><\/p>\n

\u2014Mucho silencio, y nadie se mueva \u2014y desaparecio\u0301. Durante esta espera delante del ri\u0301o, la verdad es que no sabi\u0301amos do\u0301nde estaban los gui\u0301as, como paso\u0301 en todas las paradas del recorrido. Suponi\u0301amos que se manteni\u0301an a una prudente distancia del grupo, pero aquello era ma\u0301s drama\u0301tico que otras veces. Despue\u0301s de la paliza de toda la noche, encima aquel paro\u0301n, como un par de horas, en un ambiente que calaba los huesos. Horrorizados por el fri\u0301o, nos amontonamos en grupos como un reban\u0303o humano para no perder calor. Esto, por otra parte, aseguraba la inmovilidad, lo que haci\u0301a la espera menos peligrosa que si hubie\u0301semos podido movernos, porque garantizaba el silencio. Adema\u0301s, el golpeteo del agua protegi\u0301a mucho, porque dominaba cualquier ruido. <\/font><\/p>\n

La patrulla, cuando habi\u0301a pasado por un sitio, como era el punto donde teni\u0301amos que cruzar el camino, ya no era probable que volvieran por aquel sitio en un buen rato. Era el momento de arrancar en desbandada y ganar altura en la subida al paso de la Cabra Morta. Cuando Cirera se aseguro\u0301 de que se habi\u0301an alejado lo suficiente para que nos diera tiempo de pasar sin que nos oyesen, cruzamos el ri\u0301o, por una pasarela hecha con troncos, y el camino, dejando a unos 200 metros a nuestra derecha el arranque del camino a Argolell, y empezamos una fulminante subida [el Barranc de la Cabra Morta<\/em>].<\/font><\/p>\n
