Mountain guides<\/p>\n

According to information from people in the area, during the years 1936-1939, practically all houses in Pallerols had fugitives hiding in their houses or in the surrounding forests. This is how the houses of Guardiola, Vilar\u00f3, Cal Mingo, l’Ar\u00e7osa, Ca l’Empordan\u00e8s, Canes, etc. did it.<\/p>\n

Josep Cirera<\/a><\/u>, Josep Boix de Junc\u00e0s <\/a><\/u>and Eugeni Coll<\/a><\/u> from Fenollet were guides of mountain and honorary members of the association of Pallerols-Andorra friends.

Of all of them, the most organized house was Ca l’Empordan\u00e8s<\/strong>. These are the ones who moved the most people, since Llu\u00eds Campabadal and Esteve<\/strong> were also guides in a radius of about 20 km, where they connected with other guides who led them to Andorra.<\/p>\n

The people of Vilar\u00f3<\/strong> had less structure and less possibilities to feed the people. The owner of Vilar\u00f3 in 1937 was Pere Sala i Jou<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Both those from Ca l’Empordan\u00e8s and those from Vilar\u00f3 were connected to the people of Peramola.<\/p>\n

Hidden in the woods near the houses in Ca l\u2019Empordan\u00e8s and Vilar\u00f3 there were usually more than 50 refugees, who were spread out in different shacks or lived in shelters in the woods.<\/p>\n

We have information of three expeditions that passed through <\/span>Pallerols<\/strong>, on the way to Andorra, in 1937. In all cases, Pallerols was the meeting point and the start of the expedition. Of these 3 expeditions, two depended on Ca l’Empordan\u00e8s and the other on Vilar\u00f3.<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. During three weeks of the month of July 1937<\/strong>, he was dependent on Ca l\u2019Empordan\u00e8s<\/strong> Josep Maria Torrabadella, from Barcelona. This group was more than 100 people.<\/li>\n
  2. On the other hand, on October 18, 1937<\/strong> they arrived in Ca l’Empordan\u00e8s<\/strong>, Isidre Gabriel and Riba, from Cal Barber, and in Pere Benet and Ponsich, from Cal Pere Xullador, both from Isona, with 15 other people.<\/li>\n
  3. The expedition we know that depended on Vilar\u00f3<\/strong> was that of Sant Josemaria Escriv\u00e0 de Balaguer, which is very well documented. They arrived in Vilar\u00f3 on November 20, 1937 and were hidden in a shack above the Cam\u00ed de l’Ar\u00e7osa until November 27. Pere Sala appears many times in these documents, who protected and fed them while they were in his territory. There is also the house in Ca l’Empordan\u00e8s where they sometimes went to look for food.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

    Pallerols was therefore an important center of concentration of fugitives.<\/p>\n

    The houses of Pallerols were related to those of Peramola:<\/p>\n

    Cal Mateu, Cal Tonillo, la Mora, Torrent, Junc\u00e0s.<\/p>\n

    In the case of the November 1937 expedition, the first contact was established in Barcelona with Mateu Mollev\u00ed Roca, from Cal Mateu de Peramola. When they arrived in Peramola they connected with those from Cal Tonillo and finally the most important contact were those from Junc\u00e0s, Josep Boix Betriu and Maria Oste Argerich. The Junc\u00e0s usually operated with Josep Ramonet Espar, from Ca l’Armenter d’Organy\u00e0, who was married to Concepci\u00f3 Oste Argerich, sister of Junc\u00e0s’ mistress. They knew Josep Cirera who acted as a guide on several expeditions.<\/p>\n

    Further north, other families that helped pass people were the Fenollet family, who were relatives of Josep Cirera. Those from the village of Ares and those from Barid\u00e0 were also guides. Later we find a large number of guides in the town of Parr\u00f2quia d’Hort\u00f2 and the houses that are closest to the Andorran border.<\/p>\n
